OOU Students Make Demands of N80m Compensation For their Dead Colleagues

AGGRIEVED students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, who are still mourning the death of their eight colleagues who died in an auto crash on June 26, on Tuesday demanded N80 million as compensation for the bereaved  families.

The Students Union, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta, the state capital, by its spokesperson, Damilola Adelesi, demanded N10 million each for the families of the eight victims.

“We demand that Celplas Industries Nigeria Limited compensate the families of the deceased in the sum of N10 million each.

“We use this medium as a final reminder to all concerned parties of our demands and issue a fresh seven-day ultimatum which starts from July 7 to July 15,” the statement said.

The statement lamented that there had not been any contact between the company which owns the chemicals in the container and OOU management or its students union leaders.

NAN reported that the students had on June 29 staged a peaceful protest at the accident scene and later attacked the premises of the company where they vandalised some trucks.

The students also demanded that the driver of the trailer should be arrested and prosecuted with immediate effect.

They further demanded that the company should be prosecuted while the state government should be involved in the burial arrangement of the victims.

It would be recalled that, on Friday, June 26, a fatal accident, occurred along the Sagamu stretch of the Lagos/Benin expressway, when the truck marked (Lagos) BDG 779 X, carrying the container drove against traffic and rammed into a Toyota Haiace bus bearing (Lagos) XV 311 MUS, dropping the container on the bus, killing Eight Students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University.

Following the unfortunate ghastly motor accident involving our students, the University Management at an emergency meeting held on Sunday, June 28, 2015 has directed that all examinations fixed for Monday, 29th June and Tuesday, 30th 2015 be rescheduled to other days which will be communicated to affected students at the appropriate time.
